If a diesel generator set has these 7 symptoms, it means that the unit is faulty

2024-11-07

Nowadays, diesel generator sets play an important role in many industries. However, if a diesel generator set fails, it will take manpower and material resources to repair it, which will affect the production process and lead to low efficiency. Before the unit fails, there will generally be some "premonitions". We can prevent them in advance through these external performances of the unit to avoid greater losses.

1. Sticking cylinder. Before sticking cylinder, it is generally manifested as the water temperature gauge parameter exceeds 100℃. Dropping a few drops of cold water on the body will make a "hissing" sound, and the water droplets will evaporate quickly and emit white smoke. This situation indicates that the diesel engine is seriously short of water. The unit should be operated at low speed or idle speed to gradually reduce the temperature of the unit.
2. Burning of the bearing. Before burning the bearing, it is generally manifested as a sudden drop in the speed of the unit, an increase in load, black smoke from the engine, a drop in oil pressure, and a "chirping" friction sound in the crankcase. At this time, the machine should be shut down, otherwise it will cause bearing wear.
3. Valve drop cylinder. If there are abnormal sounds such as "clang" knocking sound or "chacha" friction sound from the cylinder head, the engine is unstable, which is generally caused by valve falling into the cylinder. To avoid damage to the piston, cylinder liner and cylinder head, the machine should be stopped for inspection.
4. Shaft breakage. It is manifested as hidden cracks on the crankshaft journal and shoulder of the unit, knocking sound in the crankcase, the higher the speed, the heavier the knocking sound, black smoke from the engine, and engine vibration. At this time, the machine should be stopped for inspection and maintenance.
5. Cylinder tampering. If there is a "tapping" knocking sound in the crankcase, and the sound gradually increases, it is mostly caused by loose connecting rod bolts, resulting in cylinder tampering.
6. "Flying car". Before the "flying car" phenomenon occurs, the unit generally shows blue smoke, unstable speed, or a straight rise in speed, even exceeding the rated speed. At this time, it can be alleviated by cutting off oil, cutting off air, and reducing pressure, and then the machine should be stopped for maintenance.
7. Flywheel fragmentation. The manifestation is that the flywheel has hidden cracks. When the unit is running, the flywheel makes knocking sounds with the speed and the unit vibrates. At this time, the unit should be stopped for inspection to avoid accidents and endanger the personal safety of the staff.

It is recommended that users pay attention to observe the unit when it is working, so as to be clear about the operation of the unit. When the unit is found to have the above abnormal performances, take early prevention and carry out targeted maintenance before the unit has obvious faults to ensure that the unit resumes work as soon as possible.
