How to operate the diesel generator set in winter to easily cause cylinder explosion

2024-09-05

When the ambient temperature is extremely low in winter, cylinder explosion failure may sometimes occur when using a diesel generator set. What is the reason for this, and how to prevent it in winter. Below I will give you a summary of some situations that may easily cause a diesel generator set to explode in winter.

  1. Add cooling water only after the generator set is started. The internal temperature will rise immediately after the unit is started. If cooling water is added at this time, the cylinder block and cylinder head will cool down rapidly, which will cause cracks due to cold shrinkage.

  1. The cooling water was not discharged after the unit was shut down. The water in the machine froze into ice and increased in volume, causing the cylinder and cylinder head to swell and crack.

  1. If the generator set operates for a long time, there is a shortage of cooling water or the boiling temperature of the water tank is too high. Occasionally adding cooling water, the cylinder block and cylinder head are overcooled and shortened, which may also lead to cracking.

  1. The generator set has been working for a long time and the temperature inside the generator is too high. Discharge the high-temperature water immediately after shutting down. Will cause high-temperature parts to crack when suddenly exposed to cold air

  1. In winter, the unit does not run at idle speed and stops immediately after use, causing the high-temperature cylinder head to suddenly encounter severe cold air and cause cracking.

The following methods are available to avoid cracking of the generator set’s cylinder block and cylinder head:

  1. Before starting the generator set, the water tank should be heated with hot water. In severe winter, hot water should be filled 2-3 times. It is best to start when the water flowing out of the drain valve is about 30~50℃.

  1. When the diesel generator operates for a long time, you should wait for about half an hour after shutting down, and then drain the cooling water when the machine temperature drops to 40~50℃. After draining the water, it is best to use a thin wire to pierce the drain valve switch to prevent sediment from blocking the drain valve.

  1. When the diesel generator overheats and is severely short of water, the Yuchai generator set should be allowed to idle at low speed for 10-15 minutes, and then gradually add cooling water.

4 In addition to following the correct operating methods, the most important point is to add antifreeze in time in winter according to           the local temperature to avoid problems with the unit.
